    What Static Control Matting Does Before the Charge Finds a Board

    A person walking across a floor builds up a charge without feeling it. Several thousand volts is normal, and a few hundred is enough to damage a sensitive component. An ESD floor mat, connected to ground through a cord, drains that charge off a worker's shoes before it can jump to a circuit board, a hard drive, or a bench full of parts. That is the whole job: give the charge a controlled path to ground.

    Ask what the charge would damage. If workers handle bare boards, drives, or components, you want the conductive band, which drains charge fastest: the two vinyl runners and the Diamond Deck Plate mat. If the concern is a room full of equipment where you want to stop charge from building on people, the dissipative band is the normal spec, which is where the Discovery tile sits.

    If your facility has an ESD program with a written resistance requirement, match the number on the product page to that requirement. If it does not, the conductive band is the safer default anywhere components are touched.

    How do these mats get grounded, and how many cords do I need?

    A grounding cord runs from a snap or terminal on the mat to a verified building ground, usually the ground screw on an outlet cover or a dedicated ground point. One cord grounds a station mat. A long runner needs cords spaced along its length, not a single one at the far end, so that every part of the mat has a short path to ground.

    Check the ground itself before you trust the mat. A cord clipped to a painted surface or an ungrounded outlet is not a ground. Facilities with an ESD program test the path from mat to ground on a schedule, and that test is the only way to know the floor is working.

    Can a conductive runner double as an electrical safety mat at a panel?

    No, and this is the one mistake on this page with real consequences. A conductive mat is designed to carry charge from a person to ground. In front of a live switchboard that is exactly the path you do not want. Electrical safety matting is insulating: it is built to stop current so the worker is not the route to ground.

    How long does static control matting last, and what shortens it?

    The makers do not publish year figures for these products, so we will not either. What ends a static mat's useful life is usually not wear you can see. Floor finish, wax, or a cleaning residue that builds up on a conductive surface insulates it, and the mat stops draining charge while looking fine. A cord that is knocked loose does the same thing. Physically, the vinyl runners take years of cart traffic; the anti-fatigue mat's cushion is the first thing to compress.

    Can these mats be cut or ordered to fit a specific bay or aisle?

Give us the run length and the width the aisle allows, and plan a grounding point for each stretch. The carpet tile fits any room by count and is cut at the walls like any tile floor.
