What Anti-Vibration Floor Mats Do Before the Whole Building Hears It
Every running machine puts out a pulse. On bare concrete that pulse travels through the slab into walls, ceilings, and the rooms next door, where it shows up as hum, rattle, and a floor you can feel through your shoes. A rubber layer under the feet absorbs part of that motion before it enters the structure. Less gets telegraphed, and the machine sounds like it is in its own room.
The same layer does two quieter jobs. Hard feet on a hard floor have almost no grip, so an unbolted machine creeps an inch at a time until a hose kinks or a belt walks off its pulley. Rubber under the feet stops the creep. And a machine that shakes on bare concrete grinds its feet into the surface, while the mat takes that abrasion instead of the floor.

The Mistake That Burns Buyers: Sizing by the Foot Instead of the Load
Most anti-vibration pad failures come from sizing the pad to the foot and not to the weight on it. A rubber pad only isolates when it is loaded inside its working range. Too much weight and the rubber compresses flat and stops flexing; the machine is now sitting on a hard block that happens to be black. Too little weight and the pad barely compresses at all, which is why a big pad under a light machine feels solid but changes nothing.
The fix is arithmetic, not guesswork. Anti-Vibration Pads carry a working range of 15 to 55 pounds per square inch, so divide the weight on each foot by 55 for the smallest pad that foot can have and by 15 for the largest, and cut between the two. Three Things to Check Before You Pick
First, the weight on each foot. Pull the machine weight off its data plate and divide by the number of feet. If a motor hangs off one end, two feet carry more than the other two, so size each end on its own. Ask two questions. Is the machine bolted to the slab, and is the vibration something the building can live with if it is only reduced rather than nearly eliminated? If the machine is freestanding and the complaint is hum, rattle, or walking, a rubber pad is the right tool. Pumps, motors, condensers, generators, and appliances all fall here.
If the machine must be anchored, or it sits over occupied space where any transmitted vibration is a problem, that is a spring isolator job. A rubber pad under a chiller on a mezzanine will disappoint you, and no amount of pad size fixes it.
Where do the pads go: under each foot, or under the whole machine?

Under each foot, in almost every case. A machine on leveling feet is designed to carry its weight at those points, and a pad cut to each foot keeps every pad loaded inside its working range. A full sheet under a skid usually spreads the weight so thin that the rubber never compresses enough to do anything.
Lower the machine evenly onto the pads, re-level it, and confirm every foot is bearing on rubber. A foot hanging in the air shifts its weight onto the other three.
Will these work under a washer or dryer at home, or are they only for industrial equipment?

Both, and the washer is close to the textbook case: a freestanding machine with minor vibration that walks and thumps on spin. Cut four pads sized to the washer's weight and feet, set them, and re-level. The same sheet handles a treadmill, a home compressor, or a small generator on a garage slab.
Household machines sit at the light end of the pad's range, so cut the pads small. A pad much bigger than the foot will not compress enough to help.
How long do anti-vibration floor mats last?

The maker has not published a service-life figure, and we do not invent one. What we can tell you is what ends a pad early. Overloading takes a permanent set in the rubber, and a pad that has gone flat is done. Solvent or hot oil pooling on it softens the edges. Water and ozone are inside the compound's rating, so weather and washdown are not the enemy.
Loaded inside its range and kept wiped, a pad under a freestanding machine typically outlasts the equipment it sits under. Anti-Vibration Pads carry a 1-year limited (Mats Inc.) warranty. Check them at service intervals; a pad that has spread out past the foot was overloaded.
Will the pads show once the equipment is set on them?

Very little. The pad is black ribbed rubber, and because it is cut to sit under the foot it stays in the machine's own shadow. In a laundry room or on a showroom floor, the edge of the pad sits flush with the edge of the foot. On a plant floor nobody is looking under the compressor, and the black rubber blends with the equipment base.
The pad comes in black only. If you need a color match for a visible application, tell us the floor and we will say plainly whether this is the right product or not.
Can the pads be cut to fit odd feet or a custom footprint?

Yes, and that is why we sell the 18" sheet rather than pre-cut squares. A 3/8" rubber pad cuts with a sharp utility knife and a straightedge. Draw the foot outline, cut to it, and a round foot gets a square pad that fits inside its diameter so the whole pad stays loaded. One sheet gives four generous corner pads with material left over for a second machine.
For a plate or skid, trace the edge onto the sheet or butt two sheets together and cut them as one, keeping the seam away from a foot or bolt line.
